The FDA Finds Lead in 400 Lipsticks—How to Protect Yourself

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

It was about five years ago that the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead in nearly two-thirds of the 33 brands of lipstick they tested, at levels up to 0.65 parts per million (ppm). Now, according to a recent FDA analysis, 400 shades of popular brands of lipstick contain trace amounts of lead—with the highest levels coming in at 7.19 ppm.

What’s going on? Are the amounts found in these studies low enough to be safe, or should we be concerned?

Some Lipstick Gets Inside Us

In the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, one-third of the samples studied contained levels of lead that exceeded the FDA’s limit for lead in candy (0.1 ppm). The FDA says, however, that you can’t really compare candy to lipstick, since you actually eat candy, but supposedly consume only trace amounts of lipstick.

Is this true, that we only consume a tiny bit? I didn’t find any well-controlled studies on the topic (something I hope the FDA will remedy), but according to an article in Glamour magazine, women inadvertently eat about 4 pounds of lipstick in a lifetime. I’m sure a lot of it depends on how often you wear lipstick and how often you re-apply it. The real question is—how much lead is too much?

How Much Lead is Too Much?

So far, the FDA has set no upper limit on the amount of lead in cosmetics. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Personal Care Products Council are both encouraging them to do so. The Personal Care Products Council suggests 10 ppm, which is higher than the levels found by the recent FDA analysis, but is in line with proposals in Canada and Germany.

The FDA is thinking about it, but they say they’ve already set limits on lead in color additives (20 ppm) used in cosmetics, and I get the feeling they think that should be good enough. They continue to maintain even after this recent analysis that, “We do not consider the lead levels we found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern.”

It’s true that the amounts found in the FDA study are extremely small. The problem is that lead can build up in the body over time, and is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and small children. It is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems. Pregnant women are particularly susceptible as lead can cross the placenta and enter the fetal brain.

Why is Lead Showing Up in Lipsticks in the First Place?

It’s not like manufacturers purposely add lead to their products. What happens is that trace amounts can be found in color additives that are mineral based. Lead is found naturally in the soil, water, and air around us, so some of it can find its way into the raw ingredients used in color products. This is also why you won’t find “lead” listed on the ingredient deck.

How to Protect Yourself

The truth is, we don’t really know how much lead ends up inside us when we use lipstick, so we don’t really understand the health hazards at this point. In the meantime, here are my recommendations:

  • Go to the FDA’s site and find out—does your favorite brand of lipstick contain lead? (Remember there may be some brands that weren’t tested.) If so, you may want to consider changing brands.
  • Read the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report here—they list the brands of lipstick studied in 2007 that contained no detectable levels of lead.
  • If you’re a pregnant mother, be especially vigilant about the products you use on your mouth, as they could end up inside you, where they could affect the health of your baby.
  • Think twice before allowing your young child to use lipstick. Remember smaller bodies are much more susceptible to toxins.
  • Choose to buy from companies who are more conscientious about the ingredients they use—this is really the best way to avoid dangerous by-products like lead. And be careful, as even Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer is on the FDA’s list of products containing lead. Some examples of brands that have lead-free lipsticks and glosses: David Scott Cosmetics, Aromaleigh, Zuzu Luxe, and Gabriel Cosmetics.

Ingredient Watch List: Propylene Glycol—It Penetrates Skin Only to Dry it Out

Monday, February 20th, 2012

If you’re reading labels (and I hope you are!), you’ve probably seen “propylene glycol” on your skin care and hair care products—hopefully those you’re not using anymore! Here’s what this ingredient is and why it’s best to avoid putting it on your body.

A Few Crude Oil By-Products, Anyone?

Propylene glycol (PG) is used in liquid foundation, spray deodorants, moisturizers, lipsticks, suntan lotions, shampoos and conditioners, baby wipes, and more. Strangely enough, you’ll also find it in your antifreeze, brake and hydraulic fluid, floor wax, and paints.

PG comes from propylene, which is a chemical produced as a side effect of petroleum refining. Yes, I’m talking about real petroleum, or crude oil obtained through oil drilling. It can also be manufactured from natural gas.

From propylene, chemists can create a variety of products, including polypropylene (used in plastics), and propylene oxide, from which we get propylene glycol. PG can mix with water and is considered non-toxic, so companies use it in a variety of ways:

  • As a solvent, which helps one ingredient dissolve into another, producing a solution
  • As a stabilizer, helping to keep products constant at various temperatures
  • As an emulsifier, which helps mix together a variety of ingredients
  • As a humectant, helping formulations to attract and hold onto moisture

Because it can do so many things—and because it’s economical—propylene glycol is used across several industries, and may show up in your processed foods and beverages, makeup, liquid and spray medications, and pet food. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it does raise some questions, like: Is this stuff really something I should be using on my skin?

Contributes to Dry Skin Over Time

Like mineral oil, which I wrote about in an earlier post, PG forms a sort of seal over your skin, preventing the escape of water. (Note that it doesn’t add any moisture to your skin.) Meanwhile, it attracts and draws moisture from the lower layers into the top layer, helping your skin appear smooth and soft. Great for a short time, but as you use more and more, those lower layers gradually dry out. Your skin appears dull, exacerbating the look of any fine lines or wrinkles.

PG also tends to sit on the surface of skin after you rinse it, dissolving the fats and oils your skin needs to stay nourished. Your skin reacts by becoming parched and dry and requiring more applications of moisturizer, which make skin dryer, requiring more moisture. It’s a vicious cycle.

What’s Getting Into Your Bloodstream?

PG also enhances penetration. That means the cream or lotion you’re using is more likely to penetrate the surface layer of the skin and go deeper, sometimes into the bloodstream. So far we have no scientific studies on the long-term effects of our exposure to this chemical, but we do know that other similar chemicals—like bisphenol-A (BPA) and triclosan—have been found by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to accumulate in the human body.

One more thing: According to the Material Safety Data Sheet on propylene glycol, the chemical is a strong skin irritant, and has been implicated in contact dermatitis. The sheet goes on to warn that the ingredient can inhibit skin cell growth and damage cell membranes, causing rashes, dry skin, and surface damage.

Does this sound like something to help improve the health and appearance of your skin?

My Advice

It’s easy to avoid this ingredient. Just look for it on the label. Better yet, buy from reputable, organic skin care brands that are more conscientious and selective in the ingredients they use in their formulations. Give your skin real nourishing, moisturizing ingredients and I think you’ll notice the difference right away!

Beautiful Voices: Cindy Bokma

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Beautiful Voices is our ongoing blog series that highlights inspiring, empowering women. Our most recent Beautiful Voice is Cindy Bokma. See what she says when Annmarie asks her some questions about her own personal beauty…

Cindy grew up in New Jersey and currently lives in Southern California
with her family. She runs the beauty site HelloDollface.com and book site CindyReads.com.
Her novel, Here If You Need Me, is available on Nook and Kindle.

If money was no object what would you be doing (or, would it be exactly what you are already doing?)

If money were no object, I’d still be writing. I love sitting at my desk and cobbling together a story, letting my mind wander. I’d also travel as much as I could, I’d treat my friends and family to amazing meals and trips. At the end of the day, I’d curl up with a good book and my dogs with my kids tucked in bed and count my blessings as I do every night right now!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Not to give up! Many people have told me not to give up on my dream of being a successful author. It’s a tough road, full of rejection but I keep on persevering. I believe that if you really want something badly and are willing to work hard for it, then never give up on your dream!

Where and when do you feel most at peace?

Most at peace when my family is home, safe and sound. It’s my happiest time when I know my kids are here and the dogs and my husband and we are all together. When one of them isn’t around, I feel like something is missing!

What does beauty mean to you?

If you asked me that ten years ago I would have probably said something about being slender and pretty but now I believe beauty comes with age and it comes from within. Beauty is confidence and wisdom and kindness.

What’s your favorite beauty secret or tip?

Oil! Although I have oily skin, I have discovered that oils like the ones Annmarie makes are so great for my skin. I love a good cleansing oil, a good oil for the hair and oil to keep my face hydrated.

What do you do when you want to pamper yourself?

My biggest indulgence is probably sitting outside with a book in the middle of the day and just relaxing and reading. It’s nothing fancy or glamorous but to take the time when I’m usually answering emails or writing or cleaning the house is definitely a treat!

How does Annmarie’s mission fit into your lifestyle?

I really love the idea of only putting pure, organic products on my skin. This year, I hope to be healthier than last year and Annmarie’s products fit into what I want for myself which is less toxics, using products that are naturally harvested. I love discovering products that are soothing, gentle and most importantly, natural!

Isn’t she beautiful? If you want to keep up with Cindy’s amazing life, follow her blog at hellodollface.com!

Much Love,

Annmarie Gianni

Beautiful Voices: Jennifer Davis

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Beautiful Voices is our ongoing blog series that highlights inspiring, empowering women. Our most recent Beautiful Voice is Jennifer Davis. See what she says when Annmarie asks her some questions about her own personal beauty…

Jennifer is originally from Chicago, but currently lives in the Washington, DC area with her soul mate and their adorable yellow Lab. She is always looking for ways to improve her health through eating organic foods and using chemical free products. She enjoys having the opportunity to share her knowledge with others and give recommendations for the great products she has found.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

I find ordinary people who strive to make a difference in the world to be my biggest inspiration. Whether it’s starting a company that truly helps people or writing a blog that gets much needed information out there or something as small as starting an online petition for a cause that you’re passionate about – it all makes a difference.
This is my new favorite example, it’s so inspiring – A journey to give back through random acts of kindness every day of the year: http://www.366randomacts.org/

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

To live a life true to myself, not the life others may expect of me. If I hadn’t taken this advice my life today would be very different. My life is full of love and hope for the future and I wouldn’t want it to be any other way.

Where and when do you feel most at peace?

I feel most at peace relaxing at home with my boyfriend and our wonderful dog who accept me with all my flaws and love me endlessly. They make me feel as if all is right in the world even when it isn’t.

What does beauty mean to you?

Loving who you are.

What makes you feel beautiful?

Being able to feel confident without make up. I was never able to do this before I switched over to natural products like Annmarie Skin Care.

What’s your favorite beauty secret or tip?

Eat organic foods whenever possible and always wear sunblock!

What do you do when you want to pamper yourself?

I use one of Annmarie’s scrubs (either the Ayurvedic Scrub or the Dead Sea Scrub) and follow it with the Coconut Honey Mask. My skin always feels wonderful and glows for hours after!

How does Annmarie’s mission fit into your lifestyle?

I made the change from toxic skin care products almost 3 years ago. I went into it not knowing where to start, but little by little I have been able to replace all of my old toxic products with a safe, natural alternative. Finding Annmarie’s products has been a life saver for me! I can feel good about using her skin care line and not have to worry about ingredients that could potentially be harmful to me – and they really work!

What are your words of wisdom to other beauties out there?

This is one of my favorite quotes: “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” – Audrey Hepburn

Isn’t she beautiful?

Much Love,

Annmarie Gianni

A Strange Tip to Help You Look Younger (Plus, Special Valentine’s Deals!)

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

small hearts valentines day

I have to admit, you might think this tip is a little weird, but it’s something I learned the hard way…

In this newsletter, I’ll share this well-known-little-known beauty tip, as well as tell you about some of the great goodies we have for pampering yourself this Valentine’s Day.

Let’s start with the tip first…

When I was a personal trainer, I spent a lot of time visiting the homes of people who wanted to get into great shape.

But things didn’t always happen as planned.

My clients would ask for all different types of exercises and nutrition tips to get them to lose weight or get into great shape, but for some, whatever I told them never seemed to work.

At first, I was puzzled.

The things I taught them had worked all throughout my previous career — as an Athletic Trainer — with high school athletes as well as Division-I college athletes that eventually became pros.

Why wasn’t it working for some of my clients?

The more I talked to them, the more I recognized a pattern.

They were unhappy.

They were in relationships that weren’t fulfilling.  They didn’t like their jobs.  They felt underappreciated.

And most importantly, they didn’t feel loved.

I noticed that if I started to help them recognize something that they could love in themselves, they started to get better results — and better results meant they started to look younger, they’re skin started to shine and they would glow instead of scowl.

With Valentine’s Day coming around the corner — a day to appreciate those that you love, I wanted to ask you a question.

What does love mean to you?

Or maybe two…

Do you feel loved?

Based on my experience, if you have a meaning of love and you feel like you’re meeting that expectation, you will look and feel younger.

Of course, Valentine’s Day is — in my opinion — a bit to over blown by the media, retail stores and such, but it sure is a nice reminder to tell that special someone you care.

Hopefully, special someones ;-)

What love means to me… well, there are many different levels.  To start, loving means loving what you do, loving your self and loving others.  I truly feel if you can not love yourself fully then you may not be able to give love back fully to anything else.

So instead of giving you ideas on how to make someone else feel special this Valentine’s Day I want to focus on helping you love yourself so it starts to change how you appear on the outside.

1. Take care of your body by drinking water, giving it good food and by cooling down when you feel stressed.  There’s nothing more aging than bad food, bad water and health destroying stress.

2. Forgive yourself.  Let go of your past experiences and expectations.  Forgive yourself for who you were and stop thinking about who you aren’t yet.  Be in the now — it’s the only time you can reinvent yourself and become whatever you want to be.

3. Stop criticizing yourself.  Let the self doubt come and go.  It will never serve you. Do your best and if you come up short, do your best the next time.

4. Treat yourself the way you would want someone that loves you to treat you.  Put yourself in the other person’s shoes.  Have you been too hard on them?  Do you forget their true intentions?  Do you project your personality and wants and needs on them?

5.  Praise yourself.  If you’ve done a good job,  There’s no need in keeping everything so serious.  Have fun, reward yourself, then keep on moving to the next great mission or goal.

6. Practice looking into your own eyes and be comfortable with what you see.  Go face to face with yourself and smile, frown, laugh, cry.  Learn to love yourself in any state at any time and you’ll be as youthful as they come.

Doing these things can make you more attractive, more confident, more social, and sexier.  It sounds so simple, but it’s true.

Let us know on the blog if you like what exactly love means to you.  I’d love to hear your thoughts!  Click here.
