We Heart Fat and the Moon: Plant-Powered Care for Your Hair and Scalp
There are some brands we discover through research, and others that find their way into our routines long before we ever consider carrying them.
Fat and the Moon is firmly in the second category.
Quite a few members of our team have used and loved their products over the years. Their formulas are thoughtful, plant-forward, a little unexpected (in the best way), and backed by the kind of ingredient transparency we always appreciate.
So, when we began looking for a dry shampoo and a targeted scalp product to complement our existing hair collection, Fat and the Moon immediately came to mind.
You can now find two of their formulas on our Beauty Shelf:
- Lavender & Cocoa Dry Shampoo
- Hair Garden Scalp Tonic
Together, they round out the hair ritual, giving you more options for wash day, scalp care, styling, and the days in between.
Herbalism Meets Everyday Self Care
Fat and the Moon was founded by herbalist Rachel Budde, whose work explores the relationship between plants, our bodies, and the rituals we use to care for ourselves.
The brand creates what it affectionately calls “potions”: handmade formulas designed to bring traditional plant knowledge into approachable, everyday body care.
That creativity is one of the first things you notice about Fat and the Moon. The formulas do not feel like generic personal care products with a few botanical extracts added for good measure. The plants are central to the product, the experience, and the story behind it.
The company consciously sources local, organic, and fairly traded ingredients, continues to evolve its low-waste packaging, and approaches beauty through inclusive, body-affirming messaging rather than using fear or shame to sell self care.
Naturally, we had a lot to connect over.
Why the Name Fat and the Moon?
The name Fat and the Moon reflects the natural elements at the heart of the brand.
For founder Rachel Budde, fat was an obvious inspiration because plant oils act as a medium for external herbal medicine. They absorb and carry the beneficial properties of plants while offering nourishing qualities of their own.
The Moon represents water, which makes up much of our bodies and the bodies of plants. Its pull on the tides reflects the constant relationship between water, movement, and life.
Fat and water may resist one another, but with the right movement, they come together in a creamy cohesion—much like the plant-based body care formulas Fat and the Moon creates.
Lavender & Cocoa Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo can be incredibly useful, but many traditional formulas rely on aerosol propellants, talc, heavy synthetic fragrance, or powders that leave the hair looking noticeably chalky.
Fat and the Moon’s Lavender & Cocoa Dry Shampoo takes a much simpler approach.
Its non-aerosol formula combines arrowroot powder and kaolin clay to absorb excess oil and help refresh the roots. Cocoa powder gives the blend a soft tint, helping it disappear more easily into the hair rather than leaving behind the dusty white cast many powdered dry shampoos are known for.
Lavender and clary sage essential oils add a fresh botanical aroma without synthetic fragrance.
What Is Inside
- Arrowroot powder: Helps absorb excess oil while keeping the hair feeling light.
- Kaolin clay: Supports the oil-absorbing power of the formula and helps refresh the roots.
- Organic cocoa powder: Adds natural color so the powder blends more seamlessly into the hair.
- Organic lavender and clary sage essential oils: Give the formula its soft, herbaceous scent.
It is especially helpful when you want to extend your style another day, refresh your roots after a workout, or add a little body without going through a full wash.
Hair Garden Scalp Tonic
We spend a lot of time thinking about the hair itself, but how we care for the scalp matters too.
Fat and the Moon describes the scalp as the soil of your “hair garden,” which might be one of our favorite ways to think about it.
Hair Garden Scalp Tonic is a lightweight, water-based formula designed to support a balanced, healthy-feeling scalp without leaving the roots oily or weighed down. It features rosemary and saw palmetto alongside caffeine, panthenol, lactic acid, and hydrolyzed corn starch.
Because it is water-based, it absorbs quickly and can be applied directly to the scalp without the heaviness that can come with oil-based treatments.
What Is Inside
- Organic rosemary extract and rosemary essential oil: Traditionally used in scalp care to support a refreshed, invigorated scalp environment.
- Organic saw palmetto extract: Included to support overall scalp balance.
- Caffeine: Helps energize the feel of the scalp.
- Panthenol: Also known as pro-vitamin B5, it helps condition and support softness.
- Lactic acid: Helps gently support the scalp’s surface and balance.
Apply it to a clean, towel-dried scalp or use it on dry hair between wash days whenever your scalp feels like it could use a little more attention.
A More Complete Hair Care Ritual
Our Sweet Sunrise Shampoo and Sweet Sunrise Conditioner remain the foundation of wash day, gently cleansing and conditioning the hair while supporting softness and manageability.
After washing, the Hair Garden Scalp Tonic can be applied directly to the scalp for lightweight, targeted care, while our Smoothing Hair Serum can be worked through the lengths and ends to soften the look of the hair, smooth flyaways, and add a little shine.
Then, between washes, the Lavender & Cocoa Dry Shampoo helps absorb excess oil at the roots and bring freshness and body back to your style.
Together, the collection gives you a simple way to care for the scalp, roots, lengths, and ends without adding products that all do the same thing.
Use what your hair needs that day: a full wash, a little scalp support, extra smoothing, or simply one more good hair day before shampooing again.
A Brand We Have Loved for Years
We heart Fat and the Moon because the brand treats personal care as more than a list of ingredients and promised results.
There is respect for the plants, the people making the products, the bodies using them, and the environmental impact left behind. Their formulas are playful without being frivolous, rooted in herbal tradition without feeling inaccessible, and useful enough to earn a place in the routines of several members of our team.
We are so happy to them to our Beauty Shelf—and to share a brand so many of us have already been enjoying for years.
