Take Advantage of Our Facebook Weekly Deals

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

A few months ago we decided we’d have a little fun with our Annmarie Skin Care Facebook page…

As you know, most business Facebook pages are pretty boring, but we wanted to spice it up a bit and give you a reason to come back and connect with us.

So what we decided to do was give all our Facebook fans a weekly, one day deal that changes every week.  Every Tuesday-ish, sometimes Wednesday — so it’s kind of a two day deal — we post a special deal for you.

Sometimes it’s 10% off a certain product.  Sometimes it’s a buy one, get one at a special price.  Our most popular one to date was a 30% deal for 5 hours.  Our couple hundred Facebook fans nearly cleared us out of inventory when we offered that one!

The reason I’m telling you this is because, first, I want you to “like” us on Facebook, but, second, we thought it would be fun to extend this week’s deal to everyone.

This week, we are offering 10% off all Annmarie Travel Sets for not just one but for 3 days! These kits are great if you have a trip planned or just want to try out the products without making a larger investment by buying full sizes.

Another benefit of the travel sizes is that you can reuse the smaller containers when you hit the road by filling them with your full sized bottles.

Also, my favorite is the smaller sized neroli toning mist which is great to keep in my purse!

If you’re interested in getting one of these travel kits at this special pricing, all you need to do to is use this code at checkout…

Ingredient Watch List: Phenylenediamine, the Hair Dye Allergen That Can Irritate Skin

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Have you had your hair colored lately? If so, you were probably exposed to phenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical widely used in most hair dyes, even those that claim to be natural. It’s a popular ingredient because it helps new color to look natural, and to withstand numerous washings without fading. There are some concerns with this ingredient, however, that may make you think twice about how often you change your hair color.

What is Phenylenediamine?

Also known as paraphenylenediamine, p-phenylenediamine, or 1,4-benzenediamine, PPD is an organic compound used in hair dyes, as well as in rubber chemicals, textile dyes and pigments. Manufacturers like it because it has a low relative toxicity level, high temperature stability, and chemical and electrical resistance. In other words, it helps the new color stay on your hair despite numerous washings, dryings, and stylings.

What are the Concerns?

The main concern with this ingredient is that it is an allergen, and can create difficult skin reactions on the scalp, ears, or neck—wherever the hair dye comes into contact with your skin. The National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) notes the following:

  • PPD is potentially capable of causing multiple toxic effects following skin contact.
  • Data from studies of both humans and animals are sufficient to demonstrate that PPD has potent skin-sensitizing properties.
  • Several cases of contact dermatitis have been reported following occupational exposure to dyes containing the chemical.
  • Studies have also identified the chemical as the third most common ingredient, after fragrances and preservatives, that can cause contact dermatitis from cosmetics (mainly skin-care products, hair preparations and colorants, and facial makeup products).

In fact, a group of European dermatologists noted that as more young people color their hair, the incidence of hair dye allergies is on the rise. Patients with severe reactions suffer from painful rashes around the hair line or on the face. Facial swelling is also common. Some reactions are so serious that the sufferers must be hospitalized.

“Over-Exposure” Causing More Allergies?

Experts theorize that as more and more people color their hair more and more often, the incidence of PPD allergies goes up. PPD is also present in many inks used for temporary tattoos. In 2001, the FDA noted it had received several reports of adverse reactions to these temporary skin-staining products, including “black henna” which may contain PPD.

The FDA stated, “So-called “black henna” may contain the “coal tar” color p-phenylenediamine, also known as PPD. This ingredient may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. The only legal use of PPD in cosmetics is as a hair dye. It is not approved for direct application to the skin.”

PPD used in skin tattoos has a greater potential to cause allergic reactions because it is often used at higher concentrations than in hair dyes, and is also applied while in it’s oxidation process. Still, the fact that it’s not approved for use on the skin raises concerns in itself—how can you get your hair colored without some of the stuff coming in contact with your scalp or the skin around your hair, neck, and ears?

How Do You Know if You’re Allergic?

You may not be allergic to PPD. It may not bother you at all today—but it may tomorrow. That’s how so-called “skin sensitizers” work. The more you use them, the higher your risk that your skin will become sensitive to them.

If you’re not allergic, you may just want to continue to color your hair with caution. If you are allergic, you’ll probably experience symptoms such as those mentioned above (rash, swelling), and you may also experience blisters and sores on the scalp, wheezing, hives, itching, and dermatitis on the forehead, eyelids or ears.

How to Avoid This Ingredient

If you are concerned about allergic reactions to PPD, read labels and avoid the following ingredients. Realize that PPD is also in many over-the-counter hair dye products for both men and women.

  • p-Phenylenediamine or paraphenylenediamine
  • 4-phenylenediamine
  • phenylenediamine
  • p-diaminobenzene
  • 4-aminoaniline
  • 1,4-benzenediamine
  • 1,4-diaminobenzene

For hair dyes that are PPD-free, I only recommend Henna. I feel that it’s the safest option. (Read more about Henna here.) If you’re looking for other less-toxic options, you may want to try the following:

  • Semi-permanent dyes
  • Lady Grecian® Formula
  • Palette by Nature
  • Sanotint Natural Permanent Hair Dye
  • Jerome Russell’s Color Mousse
  • Temporary Color Spray
  • Grecian® Formula
  • Clairol® Loving Care Haircolor
  • Sun-In®, Spray-In Hair Lightener
  • Vegetable-based hair dyes such as juglone from walnut shells

Ingredient Showcase: Green Tea, Providing Health Benefits Inside and Out

Monday, May 7th, 2012

I’m sure you already know that green tea has a lot of health benefits. But did you know that it’s also good for the skin? In fact, I’m so sold on it’s benefits in skin care that I’ve included green tea leaves in five of my products.

A Little Bit About the Plant Itself

Green tea comes from a tea plant native to Asia called Camellia sinensis. Black tea comes from the same plant. The difference between the two types of tea is the processing. Green tea leaves are picked, quickly steamed or heated to prevent fermentation, then rolled before being heated again. Black tea leaves are picked, allowed to “wither,” rolled, and then left to ferment for some time before being heated again.

The Camellia sinensis plant also produces white, oolong, and other teas, and is cultivated today in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. An evergreen shrub or small tree, it’s usually trimmed to about 6 ½ feet, and grows yellow-white flowers with 7–8 petals.

Overall Health Benefits

Studies seem to indicate that green tea can help protect against or slow the growth of certain types of cancers. It’s powerful antioxidants, called catechins, protect cells and DNA from free radical damage. Some studies have shown green tea to help reduce the severity of cardiovascular disease, encourage weight loss, lower blood pressure, and help lower LDL “bad” cholesterol levels. Some small studies have also indicated that green tea may help balance blood sugar levels. Drinking green tea is known to help increase mental alertness, most likely because of its caffeine content.

Benefits to the Skin

More recent studies have focused on the potential for green tea to contribute to the health of the skin when applied topically. Here are some of the results:

  • Protects from the sun: A 2000 study showed that green tea, when applied to the skin, protects against sunburn, indicating that it has anti-aging potential. A 2003 study also found that those who drank two or more cups a day had a 65 percent lower risk of skin cancer.
  • Anti-aging: Because of the powerful antioxidants, green tea neutralizes free radicals from the environment, pollution, and the sun when applied to your skin. Since free radical damage is one of the biggest contributors to signs of aging, green tea can help keep skin looking youthful. There is also some evidence that green tea inhibits enzymes in the skin that contribute to degradation and aging, and helps maintain elasticity and firmness.
  • Rejuvenates old skin cells: A 2003 study found that green tea could stimulate activity in old skin cells, indicating its potential use for promoting skin regeneration, wound healing, and for treating rosacea, psoriasis, and other skin conditions.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Like many natural herbs, green tea is a natural anti-inflammatory, which means it will calm and soothe skin, reducing the risk of acne and redness. Skin conditions like psoriasis, for example, which produce inflammation, may calm down with the use of green tea. A 2007 animal study showed that it lessened the severity of psoriasis. Green tea bags are also great to help with puffy eyes. We recommend you brew some tea let the tea bag cool then place on your eyes for 10-15 mins. Some people say it is more soothing then cucumbers!
  • Anti-bacterial: Again, like many natural herbs, green tea has an anti-bacterial property. A 2003 study found that green tea cream was as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream in treating acne conditions with fewer side effects. Green tea has also been traditionally used to treat warts, dermatitis, and other skin ailments.

All in all, the benefits green tea creates on the inside of your body seem to be very similar to those that it imparts on the outside. I say take advantage of both!

Beautiful Voices : Rachel Pachivas

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Beautiful Voices is our ongoing blog series that highlights inspiring, empowering women. Our most recent Beautiful Voice is Rachel Pachivas. See what she says when Annmarie asks her some questions about her own personal beauty…

Rachel Pachivas works daily with Label GMOs to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods in the state of California.

Rachel believes the lack of transparency with corporations has created a movement with the citizens who believe it is our fundamental right to know what we are consuming, better yet- intertwining with our bodies and souls. Whether this is the food we eat, the water that comes out of our faucets, the air we breath, the medicine that is prescribed to us, or the products that go on our precious bodies- it is our birthright to use and to share nature’s gifts and resources with peace of mind.

Who do you feel you are today? What event has defined your life?

I am me. I have actually never felt the way I do today – comfortable in my own skin, happy to fight for my beliefs, simply a strong and beautiful woman. I am an activist who wants love to overcome the fear in this world. Recently I’ve realized that if I have an idea that needs to be brought to life, *I* need to do it. There are so many environmental and social issues and injustices that need attention, when my eyes were opened to seeing that- my life changed!

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

People. Everyday people who stand up for what they believe in.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Ever since I was a little girl my dad always told me, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for everything”. At first I thought he was just being a dad, but then… years later, it clicked. I saw he was being a friend and a role model as well. This has definitely resonated with me very much lately, especially over the past year when I started really standing up for justices I believe in. And now… I say it.

Where and when do you feel most at peace?

My Goodness, that’s a hard one. I feel at peace quite often actually. Usually it is when I am covered in dirt in my garden, or in any sort of nature setting- on the beach, in the forest, or somewhere isolated, away from the noises of society. But honestly, I could be out in the middle of the festival seeing people smiling and laughing, and that brings me an incredible sense of peace.

What does beauty mean to you?

Being love. It is as simple as that- let love shine through your eyes and your smile. That is pure beauty.

What’s your favorite beauty secret or tip?

Meditate. Seriously, it calms my mind and brings a clarity to my soul.

What do you do when you want to pamper yourself?

I go to the hot springs. Oh my! There is no other feeling like it- I promise!

How does Annmarie’s mission fit into your lifestyle?

I am so lucky to have stumbled upon Annmarie Gianni and her skin care line, especially the eye cream. :-) But it is not only about being pure and organic, it’s about educating others about this. Annmarie believes in creating beauty through knowledge as well as the goodness that you put on your skin and in your body. I actually joined the team here at Annmarie Gianni’s because I was so inspired by what she desires for skin care and for the world around her.

What are your words of wisdom to other beauties out there?

Be kind to yourself, and believe that you are beautiful. Take as much time as you can to dance and laugh with life. :)

Isn’t she beautiful? If you want to keep up with Rachel’s amazing life, follow her on Facebook at facebook.com/rachel.pachivas!

Much Love,

Annmarie Gianni

Ingredient Watch List: Toluene—It May Be Present Even in So-Called “Toxin-Free” Polishes

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

A recent study by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) found that even exclusive nail salon polishes labeled as being “toxin-free” contained one of the so-called “toxic trio”—formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and toluene.

I talked about phthalates in another post. Formaldehyde has been linked with leukemia and lymphatic cancers. But what about toluene?

What is Toluene?

Toluene is a clear, water-insoluble, flammable liquid that smells like paint thinner, and is often used as a solvent in nail polishes. Found naturally in crude oil, toluene is also used in degreasers, paints, lacquers, glues, paint brush cleaners, and ink and stain removers.

What are the Concerns?

Exposure to toluene can cause eye and nose irritation, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, long-term exposure to toluene—such as that which may occur in nail salons—increases risk of damage to the brain, liver, bone marrow, and kidneys.

The Environmental Protection Agency states, “Breathing large amounts of toluene for short periods of time adversely affects the human nervous system, the kidneys, the liver, and the heart. Effects range from unsteadiness and tingling in fingers and toes to unconsciousness and death.”

Toluene Found in Supposedly “Safer” Polishes

State investigators in California randomly tested 25 brands of nail polishes found exclusively in salons. These included several that claimed to be free of toluene, DBP, and formaldehyde. Ten of the twelve products that claimed to be free of toluene actually contained it—with four of those brands containing dangerously high levels. Another five of the products claiming to be free of the toxic three actually contained at least one of the potentially harmful chemicals.

The DTSC concluded that exposure to these chemicals is a health hazard to nail salon workers and their customers. The mislabeling of the products claiming to be free of toxins may be found to be illegal and a violation of California’s state law.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics co-founder Stacy Malkan commented, “This is a perfect example why we need to reform federal cosmetics laws to ban chemicals like dibutyl phthalate, which Europe did almost 10 years ago.”

How Can You Avoid Toluene?

To cut down on your exposure to toluene, try these steps:

  • Avoid the products found to contain at least one of the toxic three, listed here
  • San Francisco and New York City have passed ordinances that recognize nail salons that use polishes free of these toxins—if you’re in these cities, look for the seal that shows the salon is toxin-free
  • Use your own nail polish, or take your own to the salon
  • Some examples of toxin-free nail polishes include Zoya Natural Nail Polish, PeaceKeeper Nail Paint, Honeybee Gardens WaterColors Non-Peel Off Polish, and SunCoat Girl Nail Polish.

Do you have a favorite toxin-free nail polish? Please share!
