Our City Guides thus far have covered the coasts, but we haven't forgotten about the Midwest! This month, we're taking you to Kansas City, Missouri. Not only is it home to some tasty organic eats, museums and so much more, but it's also home to our fabulous Business Development Director—so we're excited to share some tips from a true local.
Kansas City, Missouri
Enjoy Pure Food—Enjoy is an organic breakfast spot with an emphasis on clean eating nourishing your spirit as well as your body. They also place emphasis on their community, and donate 1% of their profits to local organizations that are making a difference.
Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters—Thou Mayest's motto is “take fun seriously” —what better place to kick off your morning? A self-proclaimed “coffee roasting gang of freewheeling renegades looking to shake up the ant farm,” this specialty coffee shop is our favorite spot for a freshly roasted cup-o-joe.
Cafe Gratitude—We love this vegan cafe, not just for their tasty eats, but because they have put a lot of effort and thought into making the cafe sustainable. You can see this effort throughout the cafe: the reclaimed wood tables came from the torn down walls on the second floor of the cafe and a local farm in Kansas. Their lights are made from wine bottle and all of their to-go ware is biodegradable. They compost all food scraps, which are then used to enhance the quality of the soil on their farm in Edgerton, Kansas. The farm, Be Love Too, produces as much organically grown produce as they can for the cafe. What a dream!
Dinner + Drinks
Manifesto—Manifesto is a small, intimate cocktail lounge located in the basement of The Rieger, originally a hotel that was built in 1915. It was operated as a “Speakeasy” during Prohibition, and was frequented by the likes of Tom Pendergast and Al Capone.
Known for their inventive cocktails and commitment to hospitality, Esquire Magazine has named Manifesto one of the best bars in America!
Chicken & Pickle—If you're looking for some fun nightlife, this is the spot for you. A tennis and pingpong combo with smoked—not fried—wings. They allow dogs and have a life-size battle ship game. We're sold.
Sights to See
Nelson-Aktins Museum of Art—The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is an art museum in Kansas City known for its neoclassical architecture and extensive collection of Asian art.
In 2007, Time magazine ranked the museum's new Bloch Building number one on its list of “The 10 Best (New and Upcoming) Architectural Marvels” which considered candidates from around the globe. Oh and did we mention, it's free? This one's a must-see!
