Who do you feel you are today? What event has defined your life?
I spent most of my life thinking I knew who I was, but as I grew, I realized I had no idea. After going through many hardships and hurdles in my life, I began to mold myself into the person I wanted to be. I definitely have a long ways to go, but I have learned what really matters in life.
In 2012, I was diagnosed with a debilitating and incurable disease called ulcerative colitis. I spent two years of my life in and out of the hospital, bedridden, and in miserable pain. But this awful experience birthed a new version of me.
I remember lying in a hospital bed in Newport Beach, CA, feeling like my world was crashing down—and it probably was—but I found a glimpse of strength and determination in myself that I never knew I had. I realized then and there that my life was meant to be about service and meaning and focusing on the things that really matter.
From there, I went on an intense healing journey. I tried everything, saw over 20 doctors, and began to grow in so many ways that I was unable to recognize my old self. I now feel passionate, educated, and more focused, and I am growing into who I was meant to be.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was getting sick in 2012 and the years of misery that followed. Although it was an awful time, I also find myself so full of gratitude for the ways it changed me, for the ways it has impacted other people, and for how it gave me the heart to care and help other people in their lives.
I spent years searching for answers in the natural world, and changed my life, my diet, my schedule, my job, and everything else that I thought once defined me. By allowing this trial to change me and mold me, I have found a life I never would have found otherwise. I overcame it by seeking the truth, trusting my own instincts, and allowing a difficult experience to be changed into something good.
Where and when do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I am out in nature or listening to jazz music in the kitchen with my husband, Justin. I find peace in simplicity; in unstructured time and closing off technology for a while!
How does Annmarie’s mission fit into your lifestyle?
I am SO thankful that I found Annmarie. As I embarked on this healing journey, I realized I was poisoning myself every single day, several times a day, with beauty products. I tried other organic products, but broke out. They never seemed to work well, plus they always seemed to have something bad in them, even when the label said “all natural.”
It was such a blessing to find a company that understood wellness in all its capacities and not just for a marketing ploy or to meet consumer demand. You can tell she lives this mission and she has a full understanding of the natural world. That makes all the difference.
What are your words of wisdom to other beauties out there?
That you are enough. You are all it takes to make a difference. You have been created for a purpose and have something special to offer the world. Don’t ever forget it.
Isn’t she beautiful?
