So you’ve heard about all the bad stuff in your personal care cabinet and now you want to clean it up. Or you’ve never had a skin care routine but now that you are noticing some fine lines you think it’s time. Perhaps your skin just doesn’t look as vibrant as it once did.

We understand.

What's Your Skin Score Quiz

But where do you start?

This is a question we get asked often and with over a dozen products in our line alone it can seem daunting.

The best place to start is with what we’ll call a “Basic Skin Care Routine.” No need to go crazy to start (there is always time for that later, LOL.) Your Basic Routine will include, simply, only a few select types of products and will become the foundation that you can build upon later — or once you start to see some amazing results!

As a preface, let’s get this out of the way…

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and is the barrier between your body and the rest of the world. Sometimes it’s busy cleansing itself and other times it absorbs the elements around you. When your skin absorbs water and healthy oils, this is a good thing. When it happens to be toxicity in our environment (and skin care) it’s definitely a negative. So it has never been more important to know what is in your skin care and be sure it is not laden with toxic chemicals and preservatives. A basic rule is if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin (and you can tweet that!).

Back to the routine — here are 5 easy steps to starting your personal Basic Skin Care Routine:

1. Know the Skin You Are In

Before you can choose the products for your routine you will need to identify your skin type. What skin type are you? Normal/Combination, Oily, Dry, Sensitive, Mature or Aging?

If you’re not sure what skin type you are — no worries — you can check out how to identify your skin type here.

Once you know the skin you are in you can look for the products that will support the issues your skin type has.

2. Cleanse

The skin on your face is more delicate than the rest of your body and so your bar of soap that works great for the rest of you just isn’t going to do it for your sweet face anymore.

We love liquid cleansers, which might explain why we have two! Look for a cleanser that is gentle enough on your skin and yet tough enough to take away the day’s wear and tear when you use it — and, yes, that includes your make-up.

Both our Citrus Mint Cleanser and Aloe Herb Cleanser are gentle enough to keep your skin soft and supple and tough enough to get (most of) your makeup off (to remove final traces of makeup try a little coconut oil, works like a dream and doesn’t drag the precious skin around your eyes.)

Which one should you try?

Well, if you run on the oily side, we would definitely recommend our Citrus Mint Cleanser. With bold citrus overnotes this one will surely perk you up in the morning and will leave your skin clean (even better after a sweaty workout to re-invigorate all your senses.)

For those with more sensitive to aging skin we love our Aloe Herb Cleanser. This product is suitable for all skin types, gentle and creamy, and always leaves your face feeling lusciously soft and silky.

We love using our cleansers in the shower. Fit them into your morning and evening routine for the best results.

3. Rejuvenate

Have you noticed the first few fine lines? Is your dull and lackluster? Don’t worry we have something for that!

For those with signs of aging or the beginning of fine lines, a little loving is in order.

Using an active blend of vegan stem cells and antioxidants, our Citrus Stem Cell Serum is a great way for your skin look firmer and tighter. High in Vitamin C and with the essential oils of Lavender and Sandalwood, our Citrus Stem Cell Serum will make a noticeable difference in the way your skin looks when used continuously over the course of 30-40 days.

Pump a couple of drops into the palm of your hands and apply to the face and neck. Apply morning and evening after cleansing for brighter, more luminous skin.

4. Moisturize

Ever notice how brittle a dry sponge is? This could be compared to how your skin looks and feel without moisturizer. Heat, weather and a host of other environmental factors cause skin drying.

First and foremost hydration begins within, so make sure you are drinking enough water, this alone can literally pump up the appearance of your skin.

After cleansing and applying Citrus Stem Cell Serum take a few drops of one of our oils (choose the one for your skin type) and apply to the face and neck.

5. Smile!

What beauty regimen would be complete without a big beautiful smile? Of all the things that can transform someone into a beauty, a radiant smile takes the cake (a healthy cake, of course!) When you glow from the inside out, you can confidently beam a big smile to the world.

So there you have 5 easy steps to your Basic Skin Care Routine:

1. Know the skin you are in.
2. Cleanse morning and evening.
3. Repair.
4. Moisturize.
5. Flash a big smile!

Do you have products that do not contain lavender? I am allergic. Thanks!

  2. Nicole says:

Hi Annmarie…I cannot wait to try your products and this is the perfect opportunity! Thank you 🙂 My daughter (11) is going through puberty and has a really bad breakout on forehead and chin areas. I would say she is on the oily side but what would be appropriate for a young girl going through adolescence? We’ve tried Aveda but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Also heard about coconut oil treatments…just not sure where to start

Any suggestions are so apprecaited. Thanks so much!

    • admin says:

Hey Nicole, thanks for your question. Annmarie says hi (she’s spending lots of cuddle time with Hudson now we have more troops around the office).

Adolescence can be challenging and one thing we know for sure is that aggressive treatment generally over aggravates the situation when the skin really wants to be calmed.

I always recommend our Purifying Mud Mask for oily skin, it is beautiful at drying out and calming inflamed patches yet gentle enough to not further irritate the skin. Follow that with a coconut honey mask for further soothing and round off with a small amount of our slightly astringent Herbal Oil for Oily Skin. As a daily cleanser I would recommend our Citrus Mint Cleanser, this is wonderful at removing excess oils without drying out the skin and a perfect compliment to our Oily Oil.

  3. Wendy says:

I have a question. How does one know which oil to choose? or can it be more than one? Also, what about sun screen?

    • admin says:

Great question Wendy. It starts by knowing your skin type and we have a simple test you can do to work that out.

The first step on your way to beautiful, radiant skin is determine your skin type. Knowing what your skin is sensitive to allows you to tailor your skin care routine and pick the products that will be most beneficial to you. After all, how can you fix a problem if you don’t know what it is?
The simplest way to figure out which kind of skin you have is to do an easy test:

      1. Tonight before you go to bed, skip your normal skin care routine. Instead, wash your face with a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your face of natural oils, such as my Aloe Herb Cleanser.

Quick Tip: An easy way to know if your cleanser is gentle or not is whether it is non-foaming. Soaps that lather easily tend to be harsher in stripping your skin of oils, whereas those that don’t lather wash away dirt and toxins but leave behind good oils.

      2. Pat your face dry and do not apply anything else

      3. When you wake up in the morning, evaluate how your skin feels. Does it feel tight and dry? Does it feel oily?

If you need extra help evaluating your skin, do the Tissue Test: Take tissue paper (or a tissue that has no added lotion) and, with clean, dry hands, lay the tissue flat on your face and pat it gently against your skin.
If the tissue has no oily spots, you likely have dry skin.

This means that you would most benefit from products that have extra moisturizing properties.
If the tissue is oily everywhere, then you have oily skin.

The best solution for you is products created to nourish your skin naturally without making you produce extra sebum.
If the tissue has oily spots in your t-zone (your nose, forehead, and chin) then you have combination skin.

You would most benefit from using products that are formulated to fight oil on the oily regions of your face and also to moisturize the dry areas of your face.
If there is an extreme difference from the t-zone to the other areas of your face, you may even benefit from using two different products, each on the proper region of your face.

For example, using a product formulated for oily skin on your t-zone and products for normal or dry skin on the rest of your face.

Once you know your skin type you can take special care to protect the sensitive areas of your face and only use the right products for your skin. Before you know it, your skin will be more radiant than ever!

Hope that helps and know you can choose your oil (or combination of oils, some people have 2 they switch)

  4. Lynn says:

    Something I’ve been wondering about…

All skin care lines seem to include facial cleansers of some kind. What’s the matter with plain water?

I don’t use makeup (except moisturizer) and don’t live in a horribly polluted environment (okay, a small city, but I’m indoors most of the day). Do I really need a cleanser or will water (no soap) do the trick?

I’m somewhat of a minimalist, but will take your advice seriously. (By the way, I have “mature” skin, if that makes any difference to your answer).

    Thanks,
    Lynn

    • admin says:

Hello Lynn, thank you for a great question. Of course there are no absolutes so if water works for you who are we to say use a cleanser 🙂

One thing we do know is that using a gentle yet effective cleanser does leave the skin clean and soft and ready for moisturizing. During the day the skin accumulates dirt (some more and some less) and using a cleanser washes away the dirt so it does not accumulate in the pores. It also removes any excess oils and helps to gently slough off dead skin.

Have you ever tried our cleanser? Come over to our FaceBook page at https://www.facebook.com/AnnMarieSkincare?ref=ts&fref=ts and drop me a message with your address, I will send you a sample and you can see for yourself, there is no advice like direct experience!

Look forward to hearing from you 🙂 Shivie

Hi, I had a quick question. I ordered two sample packets and should have gotten the 10 dollar coupon with those orders but I cannot remember how the were sent to me. Was there a code in my order or did you send me an email with a code?
    Thanks,
    Michele

    • admin says:

      Hey there

oh we understand that one! Yes there was a card with the samples and you should also have it in an email. If you can’t find it please send an email to [email protected](our last name).com and we will get that code out to you 🙂

  6. Tricia says:

Just started using your products after noticing my friend’s radiant skin! I have noticed a difference in just two days. Love it!

    • admin says:

That’s our favorite kind of recommendation. we are so happy for you both and thank you for sharing-it always makes us smile to get a message like this 🙂

  7. Geraldine says:

I love your products and am recommending them to friends who have a new day spa in the Phoenix area. I do have a couple of questions, however:

    1) I’ve been using the Citrus Stem Cell Serum and am not sure whether it can be used alone (after I’ve cleased wth your Aloe Herb Cleanser), or whether I need to follow it up with one of your facial oils…?
    2) I’m 68 and have very good skin for my age, but sometimes it feels dry and tight. The oils help, but tend to cause slight break-outs if used regularly. Also, I’ve never liked the scent of Lavender and both oils have a noticeable amount. Do you have another product that might help plump my skin without causing breakouts?

Thank you in advance for your help…

  8. Loving your coconut face and body oil Annmarie! Do you have shampoo in your line? Hope you are all having a great summer!

    All my very best,
    Sheree Zink

    • admin says:

Yay we love to hear that you are happy and love our products (never fails to make Annmarie bust into a big, wide smile:) ). As much as we would love a shampoo in our line we have yet to find a formula that passes our purity tests 🙂

And yes we are having a great summer, thank you for asking. Annmarie and Hudson are spending lots of time together (and we get to see them in the office), life is good :).

      Make it a wonder-filled day 🙂
