What does that mean exactly—chase the sun, cherish the sea?
Chase the sun is simple. We all love the sun. We crave it. We plan our days—and vacations—around it. We soak it up because it gives us something we deeply need: light, warmth, energy… life.
The sun isn’t something to fear. It’s something to celebrate. To live in rhythm with. Something to understand and respect—so we can protect ourselves when needed, without disconnecting from the source in the process.
Somewhere along the way, however, modern sun care lost that connection. It became filled with harsh chemical filters and fear-based messaging that turned us against the very light that sustains us (I am definitely at fault for this in my earlier years).
Then, to cherish the sea—a deeper calling—is to recognize another part of that connection. When we’re closest to nature—swimming in the ocean, resting by the river, walking along the shore—the products we use to protect ourselves can sometimes harm the very world we feel so connected to. The oceans and waterways of this planet sustain everything, and they need our care as much as we need theirs.
That’s what salt+blue is all about.

Why We Created salt+blue
At Annmarie Skin Care, we’ve always believed that our choices—what we use, what we support, what we source—create ripple effects.
While working on an internal project for our Sun Love product, I took a deeper dive into the impact of conventional sunscreens on our oceans, aquatic life, and the planet as a whole. What I found was quite disturbing. And honestly, really heartbreaking. It’s hard because, yes, while I knew that conventional sunscreen was gnarly and something I didn't want around me (or my little one) or in the water I was swimming in… going down a rabbit hole on the specifics made it that much more real. It shook me a little bit.
Over 14,000 tons (yes, 28 million pounds!) of chemical sunscreen enter our oceans every year. These formulas most often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate (which can also wreak havoc on our health—but we’ll save that for another blog post). These compounds don’t just rinse off your skin—they wash into marine ecosystems.
Once there, they’ve been shown to cause coral bleaching, damage coral DNA, and they even contribute to the disappearance of entire reef systems in some parts of the world. And even more alarming, studies have found that these chemicals disrupt the hormones of marine life—causing fish to change gender and impacting fertility and reproduction across species.
I couldn’t unsee that. And we had a realization that we needed to do more.
We recognized that the world needed something more specific, more intentional, and fully centered on ocean-conscious sun care.
