Using natural skin care products is important to the overall health of your skin, but when it comes to what you see on a label or advertised in a magazine, it can be hard to tell what is truly “natural.” Natural skin care products should be made with unrefined, raw ingredients that are not just good for your skin, but good for the environment, too.
These products should be created from plant-derived materials and naturally occurring ingredients. Not overly processed or made in a lab or made with plants that are treated with harsh pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals that you would never want near your face. It can be hard to know for sure if a product you are interested in is really all-natural, but here are a few key features of all-natural skin care products.
In order for a skin care line to be considered truly natural, it must use raw, plant-based ingredients or oils derived from plants or animal products instead of being synthetically produced. It is also important to find products that are wildcrafted or organically cultivated, and have a little to no impact on the environment. If the ingredients in a skin care product are not harvested in this way, or too overly refined and processed, then, unfortunately, they shouldn’t really be considered natural.
What is challenging about finding a product that is truly natural, is that there is no regulation on the use of the word “natural” in the marketing or labeling of a product – including makeup. When it comes to something as important as your skin, you don’t want to worry about what kinds of chemicals could potentially go on it, so be on the lookout for products that don’t just boast being “all-natural.” Also, look for the word “organic” on the label. This word is regulated, and if you see it listed on a product, you know can trust what’s in it.
Don’t forget to check the ingredients label for chemicals or materials. If they don’t SOUND like they occur in nature, chances are they don’t— unless it’s from a company you know and trust. When in doubt, do some research about the company, the product, or the ingredients so you can feel good about the skin care products you use.
