Vitamin A and Acne

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Do you have trouble with your skin? Perhaps you experience breakouts on occasion, or you’ve got more ongoing skin troubles? I know it can be rather frustrating to try and eliminate acne, but with proper skin care and a diet rich in Vitamin A, you’re sure to see an improvement in the condition of your skin.

What can Vitamin A do for my Skin?

One of the most important factors of Vitamin A is that it maintains the integrity of mucous membranes, allowing your body to flush toxins and retain water far more efficiently. With that in mind, it can help relieve acne; your body will better be able to regulate the creation and disposal of sebum and other pore-clogging elements, leading to clearer skin. Additionally, because Vitamin A helps with promoting the growth of skin, teeth, and bones, your skin will be able to regenerate more quickly and efficiently, minimizing the incidence of acne and appearance of age spots. Finally, when Vitamin A is applied topically, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Where Can I Find Vitamin A?

I always recommend getting as many of your vitamins and minerals as you can from your diet, rather than taking supplements, since your body is best able to utilize nutrients from food. There are many foods that are rich in Vitamin A, which can help your acne heal from the inside out. Some excellent plant-based sources of Vitamin A include apricots, asparagus, beet greens, butternut squash, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, mangoes, pumpkins, spinach, sweet potatoes, and watermelon. It’s always a good idea to eat fruits and vegetables raw when you can, as raw fruits and vegetables are able to retain more of their nutrients than cooked ones. Alfalfa, borage, burdock root, cayenne and chickweed are herbs that also act as excellent sources of Vitamin A.

I suggest taking a look at your diet, not just your skin care regimen, in order to clear up your skin. Add some delicious fresh fruits and veggies from the list above, and see your skin return to its healthiest glow!

Much Love,

Annmarie Gianni
